What is Climate Change?

Climate change is one of this generation’s biggest problems. It is the long-term effect of changes in weather patterns in areas all over the world. Climate change is often known as global warming. While these weather shifts may seem far off in the distance, it is something we are experiencing right now. Global warming slowly destroys our planet, and our nonrenewable resources have created this problem. As we continue to burn fossils fuels such as oil and coal, greenhouse gases are produced and emitted into the atmosphere. These gases act like a thick blanket, completely surrounding earth. This traps the sun’s heat and increases the planet’s temperatures. Therefore, it is impacting our planet in many unhealthy ways: sea levels are rising as glaciers melt, food production is threatened, storms are becoming more severe, and human health is at risk.

Looking at climate change today, it is clear that we alone cannot solve the problem, and we must work together. In this blog, we will try to solve small problems in our surroundings, that may be contributing to global warming. Individuals can do big things!

Annually, the average American has a carbon footprint of around 16 tons. Today, the biggest contributors to climate change are fossil fuels for electricity, transportation, and heat. The total CO2 emissions in 2019 for the United States was 6,558 million metric tons.

There are some small things that we as individuals can do. Majority of people love canned drinks such as sodas. But when we drink these, we are adding to our carbon footprint. One can alone is about 150- 1300 grams of CO2. So, if we consumed less canned items, it could force the industries to package and sell their products in green packaging. Now after all of this, maybe we can look back and see how much we add to our carbon footprint every day.
